American Century

American CenturyAs the 1980s rolled around, so did the end of American shipbuilding on the Great Lakes. November of that year saw the launching of the 12th 1000′ freighter, the Columbia Star. Bay Shipbuilding completed construction in time for the 1981 season, and the ship entered service for the Columbia Transportation Division of the Oglebay Norton company. She remained a busy carrier for Oglebay Norton until the company sold their marine fleet in 2006. The Columbia Star was one of the six vessels sold to the American Steamship Company. She was renamed American Century that year and remains in operation for ASC.

American CenturyCentury runs primarily in the coal trade, but also carries quite a bit of ore. Most of her loads come from Lake Superior, with the few exceptions being occasional ore loads in Escanaba.
